If you are thinking about wanting a trip on a new updated ship, you should sign up for a longer cruise.  The newer, more extravagant cruise ships tend to go on at least week-long trips, sometimes more like two weeks.  Of course, you need to make sure that you take into account things like drink fees, spa treatments, gambling, gratuities, and shore excursions, when you are planning your cruise vacation. 

Families with children will do well to choose large cruise ships, which generally have programs and facilities for all ages of children.  Most of these programs have the cost included in the price of the cruise, but it is a good idea to check with the cruise line or the travel agent to make sure.

On the other hand, single adults or couples who are looking for adventure and not necessarily feeling the need for being pampered in luxury might want to take a cruise on a tall ship or think about adventure cruises or river cruises.  Travel agents can help you choose between various themed or adventurous cruise experiences. 

Another thing to take into account is how many days you want to have at sea and how many days in port. If you enjoy multiple days of the ship experience, it is a good idea to think about a cruise that crosses the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean.  If you prefer to spend more time in ports, an Alaskan, Caribbean, or Mediterranean cruise may be a better choice for you.  Different cruise ship lines specialize in either the “ship experience” for days at sea or port adventures for days in various ports.
