What is Migration?

Answer:
Migration is defined as the Voluntary
or Involuntary Movement
of an organism or a group of organisms from one place to another either at daytime or at night time for the purpose of permanent or semi-permanent residence.

The organism which moves from one place to another is also known as Migrant or Migratory. The Migrants can be either animals, birds, plants, marine animals, fishes and even human beings. The distance traveled for migration can vary widely from few kilometers to several kilometers.

The birds show migration mainly due to seasonal variations and reproduction which results in the scarcity of food in their habitat. These birds are supposed to find directions by the help of sun direction or by utilizing their natural electromagnetic tools. The various birds which show migrations are Artic Terns, Rainbow Bee-eater, Swainson’s Thrush, Northern Pintail, Bar-Tailed Godwit and many more.

The marine animals also show migration from one reason to another and than again coming back to the same reason. The main reasons for their migration are reproduction and food availability. The various marine animals which show migrations are Basking Shark, Sea Turtles, Cetaceans, American Lobster and Humpback Whales, etc.

There are various reasons, for which the process of Human Migration occurs like Economic Reasons (to find employment), Social Reasons (to live near to other family members or friends), Political Reasons (to avoid religious, cultural, political persecution or war) and Environmental Reasons (to escape adverse environmental conditions).
The human migration affects population of the place, affects cultural and social pattern of life, economy of the place and physical environment.
