What is a Boarding Pass?

Answer:
A boarding pass is the document that an airline
provides during check in, and give a passenger the authorization to board an aircraft.  The boarding pass identifies the passenger, the date and departure time for the passenger, and the flight number.

If a passenger has an electronic ticket, only the boarding pass is generally needed. If a passenger has a paper airline ticket, it is necessary for that ticket to be attached to the boarding pass before the passenger can board the aircraft.  The gate agents will count passengers by cross checking the paper boarding pass and ticket, if any.  For flights that are connecting, the passenger will be required to have a boarding pass for each new aircraft boarded.

Some airlines and airports have upgraded to automatic readers, which verify the authenticity of the boarding pass at the loading bridge door.  This method automatically updates the airlines database and registers the passenger as having boarded and occupying a seat.  It also indicates if the checked baggage will stay on board the flight. The entire passenger paperwork process at the gate is speeded up for the passenger.  However, passengers with paper tickets will still have to check in, surrender their ticket, and receive the digitized boarding pass.
