What is the standard size of carry on luggage permissible on a plane?

Answer:
Carry-on luggage or carry on baggage is a small pece
you take onboard a flight.  You are usually limited to a single piece of carry on luggage and the most common items stored are small electronics, a laptop computer, and reading or work material.

According to the TSA each airline is different with regards to the exact size.  A carry on bag must be able to fit through the x-ray machine.  If it cannot fit through the x-ray machine the luggage will need to be checked.  Often at check-in, the airline has a mock box where you will need to place your bag to demonstrate whether or not it will fit through the x-ray machine.

As far as an estimate, I would say your carry on bag needs to be no more than a couple feet long, a foot wide and probably less than a foot deep.

There are lots of luggage brands and sizes to choose from.  Here is a Samsonite piece that claims to be carry on that measures 21 inches long, 14 inches wide and 7 inches deep.

I would assume they constructed this piece conservatively.  Likely this piece would fit any and all x-ray devices so perhaps you could use 21x14x7 as a guideline when choosing your carry on luggage.
