What is a youth hostel?

Answer:
Youth hostels, also known as “travelers’
hostels,” “backpackers’ hostels,” or just “hostels,” are a form of budget accommodations catering to international or domestic travelers.  Hostels can be found all around the world, in many different forms.  Most provide dormitory lodging, while some have limited private rooms.  Hostels usually have much lower rates than hotels or motels.  Many hostels, especially those catering to young adults, are part of Hostelling International, while others are independently operated.

Most travelers who stay at youth hostels sleep in single beds, sometimes bunk beds, in a dormitory setting.  In certain areas, hammocks are available, often at a reduced rate, and some hostels provide private rooms for couples or families.  Separate rooms may be available for men and women, or rooms may be co-ed.  Bathrooms, kitchens, and other common areas are shared, often with a supply of dishes, cooking utensils, and sometimes televisions, computers, books, or games.

Youth hostels are an excellent way to get to know other people, due to the common areas and shared bedrooms.  Because of this, they are popular places for travelers who are hoping to meet up with others, often people of many different nationalities.  Travelers staying at hostels should keep their valuables on them and may do well to bring earplugs and luggage locks.
